Saturday Reading Suggestions from a reader/writer/editor:

I've been enjoying building a network on Threads (you can find and follow my account here) and getting an idea of the kinds of information that writers and editors are looking for. I've also found it inspiring to see what other editors are using for reference books.

So, in the spirit of sharing knowledge and building eachother up, here are a few books that I've found useful as a writer and editor here in Canada:

First Installment:

Thinking with Type, by Ellen Lupton: This one may be a bit niche for some of you, but it’s a quick read and a fun look at the design side of book publishing. It covers everything from font to layout, and includes pages of gorgeous illustrations.

The Chicago Guide for Freelance Editors by Erin Brenner: Now, granted I JUST bought this a few days ago, but I’ve already found loads of helpful information. This book is part of a line of reference guides published by The University of Chicago Press. If this specific topic isn’t applicable to you, I’d encourage you to check out the others that are available. Though I’m based in Canada, the information in the Chicago guides is general enough that I always find something good. You can find the entire list here.

The Chicago Manual of Style from The University of Chicago Press: My copy from university is a 15th edition, but as an Editors Canada member I have access to the online version of the 18th edition. This is one of the most universally recognized style guides and I refer to it almost daily.
